Refurbished Glasgow basketball and netball courts set to reopen
Newly refurbished basketball and netball courts in Glasgow’s Victoria Park are set to reopen after undergoing significant work to make the facility more accessible.
The two free-to-use courts – managed by Glasgow Life, the charity which delivers culture, events and active living in Glasgow – will be unveiled by former Scotland and Great Britain basketball captain Kieron Achara MBE, ex-Scotland netballer Lynsey Gallagher and Victoria Park Greens Councillor Lana Reid-McConnell on Sunday 14 June 2026.
An official ribbon-cutting ceremony will be followed by exhibition matches featuring Highland Fever – Scotland's first men's and mixed netball team – and Scottish Women Warriors Wheelchair Basketball Club.
The facility has been upgraded to make it easier than ever for people of all ages to get on court and play. The work has seen a raised level removed to allow wheelchair users to access the courts and two new gates added.
Victoria Park’s new-look courts feature new painted playing surfaces and dual-purpose, rotating hoops and goals so the courts can be used for both basketball and netball. The surrounding paths and spectator area have also been improved and new fencing has been installed.
The upgrades are the result of a £122,000 regeneration project led by Glasgow Life, with support from the local community. The refurbishment work will help Glasgow Life in its mission to inspire people to become engaged and active in a city globally renowned for culture and sport.
The Victoria Park basketball and netball courts are open to everyone, with no booking required. The courts have been transformed into a world-class public space thanks to a grant from FCC Communities Foundation, alongside support from Glasgow Life, Glasgow City Council, Glasgow Netball Association, Victoria Park Community Trust, sportscotland and National Lottery Awards for All Scotland. Local residents also held a series of fundraising activities and donated £1,500 to the project.
Victoria Park’s basketball and netball courts will reopen ahead of the Commonwealth Games’ return to Glasgow. From 23 July to 2 August 2026, the city will welcome 3,000 Commonwealth Games athletes from 74 nations and territories who will compete in 10 sports and six para sports, including 3x3 basketball, 3x3 wheelchair basketball and netball.
George Hunter, Director of Libraries, Sport and Physical Activity, and Communities at Glasgow Life, said: “The refurbished basketball and netball courts in Victoria Park offer a free, high-quality facility for players of all ages, abilities and experience levels to get active and have fun in a fantastic setting. The local community and each of the partners involved in this project deserve credit for the part they played in the transformation of the courts, which will give Glasgow residents and visitors alike a chance to play sport and enjoy the many mental and physical wellbeing benefits that come with it.”
