To mark 125 years since Sir Ernest Shackleton first set sail on the Discovery with Captain Scott, acclaimed violinist and songwriter Georgia Shackleton, a distant cousin of Shackleton, presents From the Floorboards - a powerful new album and live tour rooted in history, music, and the sea.
The music was composed on the Shackleton Violin, an extraordinary instrument crafted by conservationist and luthier Steve Burnett from the floorboards of Shackleton’s former Edinburgh home. Built as a time capsule in honour of polar explorers and as a voice for our struggling seas, the violin carries a resonance shaped by endurance, discovery, and adventure. Its sound was captured during recording sessions aboard the historic RSS Discovery in Dundee, directly connecting the music to the spirit of exploration.
Georgia is joined by guitarist Aaren Bennett. Together they present music written for our oceans and their struggling marine life, interwoven with songs penned by Shackleton and his crewmates aboard the relief vessel Morning, after the Discovery became trapped in Antarctic ice. Georgia’s distinctive, expressive songwriting sits naturally alongside these historical songs, creating a seamless dialogue between past and present.
The live performance is an immersive journey through icy seas, eroding coastlines, rockpools, and open water - encountering whales, sea creatures and the quiet dramas of the natural world. From the Floorboards honours the courage and curiosity of early explorers while reflecting on the urgent environmental stories carried by today’s oceans.
