What is domestic abuse?
Domestic abuse is defined as an incident or pattern of incidents of controlling, coercive, threatening, degrading and violent behaviour including sexual violence, in the majority of cases by a partner or ex partner, but also by a family member or carer.
Domestic abuse can include, but is not limited to, the following
- Coercive control
- Psychological and/or emotional abuse
- Physical or sexual abuse
- Harassment and stalking
- Online or digital abuse
Domestic abuse can affect men and women, in both straight and gay relationships, regardless of culture, religion, age or class. It can go on for a long time and often gets worse over time. If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic abuse, please find sources of information below

Refuge can also advise you in supporting a friend or loved one who is experiencing domestic abuse.

Women's Aid- The Survivors Handbook
Women's aid have created "The Survivors Handbook " which provides practical support and information for women experiencing domestic abuse , with simple guidance on every aspect of seeking support , you can also request this handbook in alternative formats including translations, audio recordings and more

They can speak to you in your preferred language through a confidential interpreting service. They will ask you to hold or arrange to call you back so they can get an interpreter on the line.
Amina- The Muslim Women's Resource Centre
Their helpline is a support service for Muslim and BME women in Scotland . All calls are free, strictly confidential and non-judgemental. They will deal with clients in a faith and culturally-sensitive manner. They also act as pathway to other Amina services such as financial advocacy and employability
