Stellar success for Glasgow Life Libraries at Worldcon Glasgow 2024

Members of our libraries team have just come back down to earth after a sci-fi-tastic weekend at Glasgow 2024: A Worldcon for Our Futures.

This annual event brings together science fiction and fantasy fans, writers, artists, musicians, and creators. Over 6,500 delegates attended the SEC between Thursday 8 and Monday 12 August.

Working in partnership with Worldcon, Glasgow Life librarians Sarah Summers, Kevan Smith, Alison Nicol, and Alison Young put together an out-of-this-world programme of events for all ages in our libraries.

They also took part in panel talks at the conference and promoted Glasgow Life Libraries at Sarah's amazingly eye-catching stand, where they met library enthusiasts and fellow librarians from around the globe.

Sarah's inclusive programme of library events lifted off with the launch of Nova Scotia Vol 2, an amazing selection of short stories showcasing Scotland's dazzling science fiction and fantasy landscape.

Adult workshops featured Roz Leahy on creating a TTRPG zine and Dr Russell Jones on sci-fi creative writing.

Tanya Roberts thrilled a Hillhead High School audience with her storytelling and artistic skills. For children, artist Neil Slorance gave a comic strip workshop and Christopher Mackie led a creative writing session, based on his weird and wonderful world of Cloudlanders.

At the Conference itself, Kevan took part in a lively discussion about the magic of libraries, and at a panel session, Alison Nicol shared insights into the role of a librarian in recommending books to readers.
