Explore the essential building blocks for family history for the whole of Scotland, from the sixteenth century to the twenty-first.

How do I book?

Hours of opening for the centre are 9.30am - 4.00pm, Monday and Tuesday (except Public Holidays).

The cost is £15 per day or part thereof.

For bookings on Mondays & Tuesdays, please telephone the Registrar's appointment line on 0141 287 7655.  The booking line is open Monday - Friday, 10am to 4pm.

The centre, which is run by Glasgow City Council's Registrars, will also be open one Saturday per month (except Public Holidays) and bookings can be made for this using the enquiry form. Saturday dates will normally fall on the first Saturday of the month, with the exception of Public Holidays.

Spaces are by strict appointment only and can be booked up to 8 weeks in advance.

On occasion there may be last minute spaces available to book on the day. You would need to visit the centre in person from 9.30am to request a space. Please note however there is no guarantee that any spaces will be available.

We continue to experience issues with customers not turning up for their booked appointment.  Whilst we appreciate that circumstances may change last minute, we are unable to offer spaces to anyone else unless the appointment is cancelled.  Please call 0141 287 7655 to  cancel your booking in advance if you are unable to attend on the day.

We appreciate and fully understand that our clients who regularly use and access the centre, along with new visitors, are frustrated with the reduced new opening times, however, as the Family History Centre is a non-statutory service this is not a priority. Unfortunately, given other statutory elements of the work that we carry out, we are currently not in a position to open any other days at this time.

What do I need to know before I start?

The records are varied, and depending on your search you may need:

  • name of the person
  • when they were born, lived, married or died
  • where they were born, lived, married or died
  • religion

What records can I find in the Mitchell: Registrars?

Accessing the ScotlandsPeople network through the Registrars allows you to explore the most comprehensive collection of Scottish vital records. This is the best option if you are just starting your family history research - or need to do lots of digging - and lets you really delve into records dating back almost 500 years. Using the network through the Registrars gives you access to images of more recent records that are not available offsite through the ScotlandsPeople website.

The ScotlandsPeople site can experience IT issues form time to time, which regrettably, is outside our control.  We will however endeavour to assist and update you during this time where we possibly can.

Your appointment includes access to digital images and a full index of the following records for all of Scotland:
