Crime novelist R.D. McLean welcomes two trailblazing authors to the Aye Write stage, each with a wartime mystery to unravel.
In Maggie Ritchie’s Cold War-set White Raven, bored teacher Rosie recognises intelligence officer Alex Kuznetsov from her previous life as a decoder at Bletchley Park. During an ardent courtship, Alex gains Rosie’s confidence and persuades her to take on a daring undercover mission. Rosie soon discovers that the world of spies is full of treachery, manipulation and deceit, and that what started out as a thrilling game can have deadly consequences.
Meanwhile, the award-winning Alan Parks returns with another Joseph Gunner thriller. Gunner is set in 1941, and sees the eponymous hero back on the streets of Glasgow after being wounded on the frontlines. There, he’s persuaded by his old boss to examine a body, which turns out to be that of a German, mutilated to disguise his identity. As he begins to hunt for the truth, Gunner finds himself embroiled in a high-level conspiracy that reaches far beyond his hometown.
