Black History Month at Glasgow Life Museums

collage of various artwork including a placard with the text Black Lives Matter, a golden bowl and some African style inspired art in bright colours.

Glasgow Life Museums is proud to support Black History Month with a wide range of activities. These include tours and talks exploring and reflecting on Glasgow’s colonial past and its legacies, vibrant community led displays of clothing and music, and art workshops inspired by the African art in the collection.

Glasgow’s voice in a global movement can be reflected on through a display of placards left at Glasgow Green at the end of the #BlackLivesMatter protest, part of a world wide wave of protest against structural racism sparked by the murder of George Floyd.

In addition to our public programme of free events, we have developed an online educational resource for school teachers to better illustrate the topic of transatlantic slavery to the next generation, through museum objects and archive materials.

We continue to work with the Coalition for Racial Equality and Rights who has co-ordinated Scotland’s Black History Month programme since 2001.
